Skiathos is the smallest of the Sporades Islands, but has an airport and lies closest to the Greek mainland, which offers wonderful day-excursions to classical sites such as Meteora and Delphi by hydrofoil. Skiathos is the only town on the island, and a drive to the interior allows one to uncover small villages hidden amongst pine forests and ornate churches which appear to only open their doors on saints' days. Small caiques depart every morning from the harbour of Skiathos for the more popular beaches. If you hire your own boat with outboard engine, however, you will have the choice of deserted beaches even in the busiest months of Jully and August. The northern coastline remains virtually untouched, and will reward the more adventurous with clear waters and privacy.
Skopelos is an explorers' paradise, just 45 minutes by hydrofoil from Skiathos.There no archaeological sites to visit, but a drive or walk through the pine-forested interior will lead you to valleys of plain trees, which thrive on the abundant spring water. Hillsides of umbrella pines hide small churches and white-washed monasteries; rough tracks lined with wild fruit trees and terraces of olive trees lead to a multitude of vantage points for enjoying dramatic views across the Aegean to neighboring islands.The coastline, best explored by private boat, contains small, deserted beaches.
