The Gorge, which can justifiably be called one of the "seven wonders of Europe is situated in the mountains of western Crete south of the town Chania and begins abruptly at Xiloskalo on the south side of the plain Omalos.
You can rent a car and drive up to the top and hike part way down. But to really see the dramatic part of the gorge you should do The Full Samaria Tour.
